About background

I am a largely self taught artist. For me it’s about trying to capture and share the incredible and indescribable beauty of the living form, movement and intangible flame of life .

I have the condition synaesthesia, which is when two or more of the senses don’t fully separate from each other, as the brain develops as an infant. So for me sound and music is also experienced as colour and movement. For instance I might be obsessed with the way that a dog generates transcendent perfection in motion, and if I hear the matching music, I feel like I enter a whole other level of consciousness.

I feel like no amount of words can begin to describe the experience, so my sculpture is my attempt to distil it, to connect with the otherness of the animal, its soul and essential spiritual self.

I have always felt that a simple thing in the natural world, such as the corner of a field, a dead branch, a patch of flowers, has it’s own power and spirit, it’s own presence. That if we could only really experience it, would be enough wonder and discovery for a lifetime. That if we could really look inwards, and be in the moment, instead of always moving forward on our own thin thread of time. If we could just stop. Stop travelling in time, like a train rushing through, as we are cursed to always do. People talk about time travel, as if it’s something impossible, but we are actually doing it constantly, and it’s stopping in time that is an impossible goal to me. This is what I try to capture in my paintings, the essence of a moment, the thing as it really is outside time.
