As an animal lover, I’m continually amazed at how, with the same basic model, every species of
creature manages to be so completely unique, so completely themselves alone, like nothing else in every way: movement, sound, smell, behaviour, personality, but most of all, the intangible essence of the animal, in this case, the cat.
Cats: they can seem like the softest, cutest, most loving and intuitively understanding of their human family, and of course they are, but…they have the whole of the wild inside them, it is who they are. Their wildness can take on a wide variety of disguises, and on the whole they can, very successfully, bridge the gap between the human and animal worlds, and enjoy every luxury of domestication to the full, without compromising themselves in any way.
Even the fluffiest house kitty, who, on the face of it, might seem to have surrendered completely to tameness, is really just filled with the dreamy contentment of I leopard with a swollen stomach, sleeping in a tree after a successful kill, or a lion laying docile in the sun, chewing gently on their friends tail.
Don’t be fooled, it’s all still in there somewhere, however deeply buried it may be…
