Ceramic Sculptures

Italian Greyhound 1

I have always loved animals. I remember when I was about five staring at a dog’s foot, and being amazed at how beautiful and right it looked. From an early age I have loved sculpting. My teddy was an early subject but animals have always been favourite. I sculpt in clay and my other love, painting, comes into pay with the decoration. I enjoy experimenting with glaze and under-glaze.

A lot of my dog and other animal sculptures are what I think of as 3D sketches. I think that leaving out too much distracting detail can really highlight the spirit of the animal. I do love capturing people’s pets for them and when it is a portrait detail brings out the individual character.

I often feel the urge to make strange creatures; some are like animal totems, others just seem to ask to be made, sometimes from other people’s donated or rejected thrown pots or other vessels (recycled series). I often don’t know what I am making at first, I have to see what wants to come out and sometimes it is very surprising!

I have divided my sculptures into various categories to make them easier to find. Many are for sale in my Etsy shop: https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/EllenCooperArt
